On the 8th of March 2023, a group of 10 secondary education and vocational training teachers from Colégio S. Gonçalo in Amarante (Portugal) completed the final workshop of the Illumine Professional Development Programme. During a period of three months, participants attended a series of workshops for teachers on evidence-based teaching practices about Neuroscience in Education around the topics of Science of Learning, Teacher Inquiry, Retrieval Practice, Stress Mindsets, Interleaving Practice, Distributed Practice and Brain Breaks. Teachers were invited to explore and discuss evidence-based teaching and learning strategies and, by following the ‘Teacher as Researcher’ approach, designed research projects to be implemented with students in the near future. Participating teachers provided positive feedback on the workshops and stated that “having the time to work collaboratively with colleagues was one of the main takeaways of the workshops”and also “having the time to reflect on their professional practice while discussing it with their peers was of extreme importance“. Teachers added that “they are eager to “experiment new strategies in class to help students be more engaged, motivated and achieve better learning outcomes”.
