On 8 June 2022, a group of high school and vocational school teachers from Escola Pia Sarrià in Barcelona completed the tenth and final workshop of the Illumine Professional Development Programme. Participating teachers were introduced to evidence-based teaching and learning strategies and designed their own research projects. These projects involved conducting research lessons – lessons in which teachers tested one or more of the evidence-based strategies with their students. Results of the research lessons were shared with peers and prepared as case study reports. Participating teachers completed the following research lessons:
Conxi Curto ran a research lesson involving stress management strategies in tutorial classes for high school students.
Cristina Caballero, Julià Hinojosa and Marta Martí ran research lessons involving retrieval learning and brain breaks in high school classes on the immune system.
-
Montse Ascensión and Mònica Huguet ran research lessons involving retrieval learning and spaced learning in review classes for a final exam on muscle fitness (vocational education).
Patri Falcó, Cristina García and Jaume Sabaté ran research lessons involving retrieval learning and brain breaks in classes on activities and stays in the natural environment (vocational education).
Participating teachers commented that “reflecting on one's own teaching is very interesting, especially when done together with other teachers. We should always incorporate this dynamic at the beginning and end of the course” and “it is very important that the teacher is familiar with the investigations that are carried out in the educational field. The educational system and the teacher's working hours should favour this connection.“
